For forty years I have been collecting discarded materials to use in my paintings, anything I stumble upon that strikes me visually, or text that stops me in my tracks with its strangeness or suggestive qualities. Photos, newspaper clippings, children’s drawings, protractors, discarded postcards become the collage element that sends me off on the adventure that is a new painting.

Each painting begins with an item selected as a starting point, pasted to the canvas, that launches me into a chess game of colors, textures, lines, orchestrated together in a finished piece. These elements are a bread crumb trail that has stretched through my life and constitutes a visual memoir of my journey.

This show is composed of the detritus of the most interesting items I have collected from my day job at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. This job not only supported my family and allowed me to continue to make art, but it also provided me with flotsam and treasure to incorporate into my work.  In my twenty-eight years as an IT analyst, I have seen computers and tech evolve and streamline to sophisticated extremes and this show is the culmination of all my collecting and saving from those years.

B48 is the room number of the storeroom where I worked during the final part of my journey. A place where I daydreamed about turning these discards and trash into something meaningful and beautiful. I hope you enjoy it.

Anthony Scarzafava is a graduate of the Pratt Institute and has been a painter for more than forty years.
